Meet Volunteer: Susana Herbert
With a passion for learning and a heart for service, Susana Herbert guides people through the often-intimidating world of personal electronics in her volunteer role at The Center.
Originally from Montana, Susana has been a West Seattle resident since 1966. She has decades of teaching experience and a deep curiosity about technology. Her journey into tech began as an English teacher, when early word processors sparked her interest. She soon became a tech mentor, maintaining school computer labs and training staff and students. Now retired, she continues that mission by volunteering at The Center, where her patience and enthusiasm have made her a favorite mentor. Staff at The Center say the people she helps “absolutely love her.”
Susana began volunteering at The Center before the pandemic, helping in the computer room and even installing a security system. After a brief hiatus, she returned a year and a half ago and now leads her own class, Traveling the Digital World, empowering people to use technology with confidence.
Susana sees volunteering as a way to give back and “make up for lost time.” Staff have noticed her insatiable love of learning—something she says is constantly fueled by the people and experiences she encounters at The Center. For Susana, volunteering isn’t just about teaching — it’s about continuing her own journey of discovery.
