Learning never gets old
Do you remember the day that you graduated from high school? You were probably thrilled that you were done sitting in class, writing book reports and preparing assignments! But what you may have missed after graduation was the opportunity to continue learning throughout your life. Lifelong learning provides joy and satisfaction no matter your age, background or economic status. Learning also keeps your mind active and can help you develop an interest in subjects you are unfamiliar with.
To support you as a lifelong learner, The Center offers classes in foreign languages, music, writing, art and many other subjects. In addition, we present lectures and documentary films on a variety of topics. Our classes are also a good way to meet people who may share a common interest.
Other great resources for lifelong learning are low-cost classes through South Seattle College and Seattle Parks and Recreation—and our city’s excellent library system. West Seattle has several branches of the Seattle Public Library that provide thousands of print books, audio books, eBooks and DVDs on every imaginable subject, all available at no charge.
Another idea is to learn a musical instrument. Studying music activates a different part of the brain and is a completely new skill for most people. When I began taking cello lessons 10 years ago, I found this quote and taped it up on my music stand to keep from feeling discouraged: “Proceed with patience and good humor, tackle the new task bit by bit, keep expectations low and persistence high.” May the joys of learning accompany you throughout life!
