Finding Connection Through Westside Friends
By Michele Fawcett-Long, Westside Friends Coordinator
What makes The Center’s Westside Friends program special? I recently asked octogenarian Katie Love, and Maria and Melissa, the two volunteers matched with her, to share their experiences.
“Oh, my girls are wonderful,” said Ms. Katie. “Maria, she takes me to the store and sometimes surprises me with a treat. And then Melissa and I mostly go to the farmer’s market, and if I can’t go, I can send her, and she’ll do my shopping. I look forward to both of them coming.”
Maria also helped Ms. Katie reorganize her apartment, so she can move around more safely and have space to create her extraordinary fabric art.
“This generation of adults is my favorite,” said Maria. “There’s an energy and a spirit and always something to learn. If there are people who don’t have enough support, it doesn’t take much for me to hang out and chat.”
Melissa added, “I started volunteering when I had recently moved to West Seattle. I like that I can form a relationship with someone. It’s been so much fun. One of my favorite things about being with Ms. Katie is hearing her stories. Have you guys heard about Kenny G?” (Kenny G practiced music in her basement!)
Westside Friends is designed to build connections for older adults. We match you with a volunteer for ongoing companionship and practical help. Our volunteers can chat over the phone, visit with you or help you with tasks like grocery shopping or picking up library books.
